The Pomeranian Dukes' Castle in Darłowo - the only seaside castle in Poland

The Pomeranian Dukes' Castle in Darłowo is the only castle located directly on the Polish coast and the city's most important monument. Its walls date back to the times when the crowned ruler of three Scandinavian kingdoms resided in Darłowo.

Where did the castle come from?

The construction of the stronghold began in the second half of the 14th century , during the reign of Duke Bogusław V. The castle was built on an island formed by the Wieprza River bed - its location above the water provided it with natural defense and at the same time control over the trade route to the sea.

King Eric of Pomerania — ruler of three kingdoms

The most famous figure associated with the castle is Eric of Pomerania —grandson of Duke Wartislaw VII, who became king of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway thanks to the Kalmar Union. After a turbulent reign and the loss of his thrones, he returned to his native Pomerania, settled in Darłowo, and spent the last years of his life there. He died in 1459, and his figure remains a symbol of the city to this day—the annual King Eric's Run is named after him.

Today, the castle houses a museum . Its rooms display collections related to the history of Pomerania, religious art, crafts, and the region's maritime past. Visitors can climb the tower , which offers panoramic views of Darłowo, the Wieprza Valley, and—in good weather—the coastal strip.
